Driver's licenses for immigrants
Austin American-Statesman
Category: Immigration
Level: State
This article is concerning an enacted policy that affects families and individuals.
Why this is important for individuals/families:
Immigrant families will now have the ability to provide legal transportation for their families. This could decrease the amount of illegal and uninsured drivers on the road.
My views:
Honestly, I am confused by the signing of this bill. I can see the benefits of allowing immigrants to obtain licenses, such as reducing the number of unlicensed drivers as well as possibly uninsured drivers. My big question is, won't illegal immigrants have to admit to being illegal? Their licenses will show that they are illegal, so wouldn't they be at a higher risk for getting deported when getting pulled over or even applying for the license? According to the article, immigrants and their supporters are excited about the bill so that must mean there is something that keeps them from getting deported. I think I just need more of an explanation to understand the situation. I'm not sure where I stand on this issue but I can imagine that are people who are on the negative side. If we are going to be a supportive nation that is open to everyone then making more things available to immigrants seems to be a move in a positive direction.
