Airlines Promise to Return to Civility, for a Fee.

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Business

3. Level of Problem: National

4. The article concerns:
-Airline companies are introducing a whole new line of fees, but for extra things we might enjoy like early boarding passes, quiet lounges, hot food in coach, and more. Airlines will also be using past data to target fliers.

5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-The Airlines have massive amounts of data similar to what retailers use to target shoppers, and this can come off a little creepy, or even invasive. The reasoning for these fees to make up for the increasing cost of jet fuel.

6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-I've been traveling on planes for as long as I can remember. I've made several trips back and forth to Colombia, which is a relatively long flight. Over the years, the things they give you on the flight to make it a little more comfortable like headphones, pillows, blankets, drinks, and even snacks gave decreased. You have to pay for EVERYTHING. My recent domestic trip to Virginia to visit some family was probably the worst flight I've ever experienced. First of all, the narrow seats didn't even decline, making it impossible to get any Zzz's. No drinks or snacks were offered, unless you felt like paying ridiculous prices like $5 for a tiny pack of hummus and pretzels or $3 for a small bag of chips. Oh and don't even get me started on baggage fees. $50 for each carry on and $100 for each luggage? Blasphemy.
I do understand that jet fuel has tripled over the last few years, and cutting some corners is in order. But I don't think going so far that you're making your passengers is OK. I think this form of marketing is much more acceptable and gives the passengers options for a more comfortable and enjoyable flight, making them even want to book another flight with the same airline.
